The Society of Vascular Nurses is a  society run by nurses for nurses.  Our individual membership to date has reached 200 throughout the whole of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland.  Individual and ward membership is available, and also associate membership to all other healthcare professionals working in the vascular speciality.

We provide a national network for nurses working in vascular nursing to promote the needs of vascular patients and to encourage nurses to gain the knowledge and skills to fulfil the complex needs of these patients.  This network aims to provide an active forum for educational and professional development and encourages members to provide best practice to patients within their area of work.

The society supports vascular nurses and creates an opportunity for them to share experiences and network beyond their locality and to provide mutual support for each other.

We wholeheartedly promote Vascular nursing as a specialist area of nursing practice and encourage junior nurses to develop their skills accordingly.

The society’s functions also include:

  • Providing a portfolio of core competencies for vascular nurses

  • Providing a members newsletter

  • Running an Annual National Conference which encourages presentations by nurses

  • A society Website: www.svn.org.uk

  • Regional groups funded by the SVN which aim to provide networking opportunities for vascular nurses within the UK by half/ full day forums (details of locations/ leaders provided on separate sheet / newsletter)

  • Vascular Nurse Specialist group meetings to provide informal opportunities for VNS’s to share developments and practices and support for each other

  • Affiliation with other societies e.g. Vascular Surgical Society (VSS), Society of Vascular Technologists (SVT) and the British Vascular Foundation (BVF) and Amputee Research Forum

  • Bursary awards for education and development pursuits

  • Opportunities to apply for research study grants

  • Staff Nurse development secondment to the SVN National committee.

  • Provide advice, support and workshops to help members undertake research and audit, and to present and publish their results

The SVN is your society so please communicate with us.  Any volunteers to help with the organisation of regional groups or accommodate a nurse specialist meeting are always appreciated.  Please use our newsletter to communicate with other members about the challenges of vascular nursing and to share any information to help enhance vascular nursing throughout the UK.
